Special forces deployment in West Papua

Special forces deployment in West Papua

After a senior officer’s murder last April 26, Indonesia has strengthened its military presence in

East Papua.

The chief of the Indonesian assistance agency was murdered on the high plateau of Papua by separatists. The National Liberation Army (WPNLA) claimed responsibility for this assassination within the frame of the struggle for Papua’s independence.

The president ordered police and army to arrest the rebels.

The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) deployed more than 400 soldiers of the Special Forces.

Nicknamed « Satan’s forces », they already served in conflicts in East Timor and Aceh. This

deployment is carried out after 21,000 soldiers were sent for 3 years in Papua.

Indonesia fears that Papua’s loss could convince other regions to revolt for their independence. But the real reason may be that Papua has the 6th biggest goldmine and the 2nd biggest copper mine in the world.

Fire in an oil refinery

Fire in an oil refinery

On Monday morning, a fire broke out in Balongans refinery. In fact, medias and residents around confirm that a thick and black smoke was appearing above the oil refinery.

An explosion had been heard all around and, according to the national disaster management agency, for now 6 persons are critically hurt and 1 died of a heart attack due to the explosion. No other casualty has been reported.

The oil company, Pertamina, expects the operations to be over within 5 days. However, they are optimistic as the damage did not reach the oil treatment area which could have been more catastrophic.

The State said that the population would have normal access to fuel but if there were to be an oil shortage in Jakarta, the supplier would be replaced for a while by nearby refineries as Cilacap or Tuban.

Indonesian police are waiting for the end of the fire to discover its cause, but this was probably due to the thunderstorm.

Fugitive Andrei Kovalenko kicked out of Bali

Fugitive Andrei Kovalenko kicked out of Bali

Andrew Ayer, aka Andrei Kovalenko, a Russian fugitive was expelled on Tuesday March 23 from Bali.

The latter fled his country of origin to avoid a conviction for a Russian drug case in 2011. He was finally arrested in Bali for possession of hashish. He served a one-and-a-half-year sentence in Kerobokan Prison.

He was supposed to be transferred to Russia by the custody of TPI Ngurah Rai's Class I Special Immigration Office at the beginning of February.

Andrei managed to escape the hands of local authorities as he was about to be kicked out of the country after being handed over to Interpol.

Police found Kovalenko at a friend's house after 13 days on the run. The suspect was therefore handed over to the Russian authorities yesterday to return to Russia and serve his sentence.
