Indonesia and China negotiating over detention of Chinese sailors

 

Sunday 24 January, Indonesian authorities arrested 36 Iranian crew members and 25 Chinese crew members of two tankers. These men are accused of having illegally transferred fuel at sea, shutting down their identification systems and others.


In 2018, Donald Trump had announced that countries that bought Iranian crude oil would be penalized. Since then, Iranian oil tankers have been selling on the black-market disabling tracking equipment to conceal their destinations.


According to Zhao Lijian, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, the Chinese detainees are for the moment “in good condition” and the Chinese authorities have asked the Indonesian authorities “to investigate the case impartially in accordance with the law, and to ensure the health, safety and legitimate rights and interests of the crew”.


Yesterday, Wednesday 27 January, Indonesia was asked by the Chinese government to treat the detainees fairly. However, no details of the location of the Chinese tanker transferring fuel from an Iranian vessel, the owner or the destination of the Chinese vessel have been released. Regarding the Iranian detainees, nothing has been communicated.

36 marins iraniens et 25 marins chinois ont été arrêtés dimanche 24 janvier par les autorités indonésiennes pour transport illégal de carburant, occultation des systèmes d’identification et autres délits.


En effet, depuis 2018, lorsque Donald Trump avait déclaré que tous pays achetant du pétrole iranien seraient pénalisés, les pétroliers iraniens ont commencé à vendre sur le marché noir et pris l’habitude de désactiver les équipements de suivi afin de dissimuler leurs destinations.


Une communication entre les autorités indonésiennes et le porte-parole du ministère des Affaires étrangères de la République populaire de Chine, Zhao Lijian a eu lieu. Zhao Lijian a déclaré que les marins chinois étaient « en bon santé » et que l’ambassade aurait demandé aux autorités indonésiennes « d’enquêter sur le cas de manière impartiale conformément à la loi, et assurer la santé, la sécurité et les droits et intérêts légitimes de l'équipage ».


Ce mercredi 27 janvier, le gouvernement chinois a demandé aux autorités indonésiennes de traiter équitablement les détenus. Les médias n’ont cependant aucune information sur l'emplacement du pétrolier chinois transférant le carburant d'un navire iranien, le propriétaire ou la destination du navire chinois. Aucune information n’a été divulguée en ce qui concerne le sort des marins iraniens.

New Eruption of the Semeru volcano

 

A new volcanic eruption took place on January 16 on the Indonesian volcano Semeru, located on the island of Java. The eruption began around 5:24 pm local time and led to the formation of a pyroclastic flow. An ash plume also formed on the volcano which reached 5 kilometers in height.

The 3,676-meter-high Semeru volcano is the highest point on the island of Java, Indonesia's most populous island. It has a fairly turbulent eruptive history, with at least 55 documented eruptions from 1818 to today, ten of which have claimed victims. Since 1967, the Semeru has remained in a state of virtually continuous activity.

Following the eruption, there were no immediate evacuations, but the National Agency for Disaster Mitigation warned the population of villages on the mountain slopes.

Une nouvelle éruption volcanique a eu lieu le 16 janvier dernier sur le volcan Semeru, situé sur l'île de Java. L'éruption a commencé vers 17h24, heure locale, et a conduit à la formation d'un flux pyroclastique. Un panache de cendres s'est également formé sur le volcan qui a atteint 5 kilomètres de hauteur.



Le volcan Semeru, haut de 3 676 mètres, est le point culminant de l'île de Java, l'île la plus peuplée d'Indonésie. Il a une histoire éruptive assez mouvementée, avec au moins 55 éruptions documentées de 1818 à aujourd'hui, dont dix ont fait des victimes. Depuis 1967, le Semeru est resté dans un état d'activité pratiquement continue.



Suite à l'éruption, il n'y a pas eu d'évacuations immédiates, mais l'Agence nationale pour la Gestion des Catastrophes a mis en garde la population des villages situés sur les pentes des montagnes.

Air Crash in Java Sea

Saturday, a plane with 62 passengers crashed in the Java Sea just after taking off from Jakarta.

According to the Indonesian Navy, there wouldn’t be any survivors.

Before the crash, fishermen saw the accident. One of them reported from Lancang Island: “It was like lightning, very fast. It exploded when it hit the water. I saw debris floating. It was airplane debris.”

People are still shaken by the tragedy. Relatives of the passengers are waiting for information while the navy is searching the wreckage area: "We're in grief, still praying for the best” the pilot’s uncle said, "If he is gone what I want is to be able to bring him home and bury him properly," a mother said. The Navy is currently looking for the black boxes containing data recorders with the cockpit voice after taking off from the capital, that could be used to find out the source of the accident.

 

Un avion s’écrase dans la Mer de Java

Samedi, un avion transportant 62 passagers s’est écrasé en Mer de Java juste après avoir décollé de Jakarta. D’après la marine indonésienne, il n’y aurait pas de survivants.

Avant l’accident, des pêcheurs ont été témoins de la scène. L’un d’eux était sur l’île de Lancang: « C’était comme un éclair, très rapide. L’avion a explosé lorsqu’il a heurté l’eau. J’ai vu des débris flotter. C’étaient des débris d’avion. »

Les proches des passagers attendent des informations de la marine nationale qui recherche l’épave de l’avion. « Nous sommes dans la peine, et nous prions » dit l’oncle du pilote; “S’il est parti, je veux pouvoir le ramener à la maison et l’enterrer comme il le faut“ confie une mère. La marine indonésienne recherche actuellement les boites noires contenant les enregistrements et les données du vol qui pourraient être utilisés afin de trouver la source de l’accident.

New magnitude 5.0 earthquake in Aceh

Today, Thursday January 7, 2021, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake erupted at 6:27 a.m. local time in Sabang, Kota Sabang, Aceh. It is 77km deep from the epicenter that the earthquake started. However, the exact magnitude, epicenter and depth of the earthquake can be questioned: seismologists are still studying the data from this earthquake. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) also determined a magnitude 5.0


Fortunately, the earthquake did not take place in the city: the nearest inhabited town is Sabang, 124 km from the epicenter. Sabang is an Indonesian city in the province of Aceh. The area is 134 km² and the population is 34,333 habitants. For the moment, no serious injury or death has been reported by the authority and there is no major material damage either.

 

Nouveau séisme de magnitude 5,0 à Aceh

 

Ce jeudi 7 janvier 2021, un séisme de magnitude 5.0 a fait trembler Sabang, Kota Sabang, Aceh en Indonésie. Le séisme s’est déroulé à 6h27 du matin, heure locale et à une profondeur de 77km de l’épicentre. Cependant les données sont toujours remises en question par les scientifiques : la magnitude, l’épicentre et la profondeur du séisme ne sont pas exactes et les données sont en cours d’étude. Mais le Centre Sismologique Européen-Meditérranéen (EMSC) a également déterminé cette magnitude de 5,0.


Heureusement, le séisme n’a pas fait de dégâts ni humain ni matériel selon les autorités. Il ne s’est pas déroulé en pleine ville : en effet la ville habitée la plus proche se trouve à 124 km de l’épicentre, Sabang située dans la province d’Aceh. Cette ville a une superficie de 134 km² et il y a environ 35.000 habitants.
