Sinabung volcano erupts

 Sinabung volcano erupts

On Monday March 02, the Sinabung volcano on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia erupted, affecting 37 villages in the regions of Tiganderket, Kutabuluh, Tigabinanga and Laubaleng.

This is already the fourth explosion since 2010 with eruptions that killed 23 people in total.

The head of the Karo regency's Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Natanael Warinangin said they measured ash columns ranging from 4,000 to 5,000 meters above the summit. Futhermore Mr Warinangin talks about hot cloud gliding distance reached 2-5 kilometers and there were 13 hot clouds releases between 6:42 a.m. and 8:20 a.m. local time.

The volcano has been put on Alert III and several sub-districts are affected by ash rains.

The authorities have issued instructions to the populations. It is advisable not to perform outside activities within 3 to 5 kilometers from the summit and to use masks against volcanic ash.

Anomalies detected on crashed Boeing

A month after the Sriwijaya Air Boeing crashed off Indonesia on January 9, investigators released a preliminary report. They indicate the existence of an anomaly on the plane’s autothrottles. The aircraft lost 3,000 meters in altitude in less than a minute before disappearing into the Java Sea minutes after takeoff, with 62 people on board, all of whom unfortunately died.

Autothrottles are a complementary system to the autopilot which is used to automatically control the thrust of the aircraft and therefore its speed. They can be disabled by the drivers in the event of a problem. "The left autothrottle was too far back, while the right did not move at all, it was stuck," said the Indonesian transport security manager. The causes of this anomaly have yet to be defined.

The 26-year-old plane, previously operated by U.S. companies Continental Airlines and United Airlines, hit the water four minutes after taking off from Jakarta. The crew had not issued a warning message or reported any technical problem before the accident and the aircraft was probably intact when it entered the water.

Brexit opportunities

Brexit opportunities

Since the Brexit in 2019, UK government has been eager to negotiate its own treads deals. Indonesia is seeking to make the most of the situation.

Indonesia is the second supplier of nickel to the UK, behind the United States. If nickel is Indonesia’s major export to the UK, footwear is currently less successful as European industries export more.

Indonesia has other resources that could be interesting for the UK such as palm oil and natural rubber. An agreement could represent an opportunity to increase exports. Competition between Indonesia and Europe is tough because Indonesians exporters pay a custom duty of 9.3% when they convey to UK, while Europeans can export for free.

There is also a potential growth of cocoa, fabric, shoes, construction material and cooking fats. But competitors such as Turkey and Italy are really present in the fabric market or even Belgium and the Netherlands also vie for the UK footwear market.

Indonesia and China negotiating over detention of Chinese sailors

Indonesia and China negotiating over detention of Chinese sailors

Sunday 24 January, Indonesian authorities arrested 36 Iranian crew members and 25 Chinese crew members of two tankers. These men are accused of having illegally transferred fuel at sea, shutting down their identification systems and others.

In 2018, Donald Trump had announced that countries that bought Iranian crude oil would be penalized. Since then, Iranian oil tankers have been selling on the black-market disabling tracking equipment to conceal their destinations.

According to Zhao Lijian, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, the Chinese detainees are for the moment “in good condition” and the Chinese authorities have asked the Indonesian authorities “to investigate the case impartially in accordance with the law, and to ensure the health, safety and legitimate rights and interests of the crew”.

Yesterday, Wednesday 27 January, Indonesia was asked by the Chinese government to treat the detainees fairly. However, no details of the location of the Chinese tanker transferring fuel from an Iranian vessel, the owner or the destination of the Chinese vessel have been released. Regarding the Iranian detainees, nothing has been communicated.

New Eruption of the Semeru volcano

A new volcanic eruption took place on January 16 on the Indonesian volcano Semeru, located on the island of Java. The eruption began around 5:24 pm local time and led to the formation of a pyroclastic flow. An ash plume also formed on the volcano which reached 5 kilometers in height.

The 3,676-meter-high Semeru volcano is the highest point on the island of Java, Indonesia's most populous island. It has a fairly turbulent eruptive history, with at least 55 documented eruptions from 1818 to today, ten of which have claimed victims. Since 1967, the Semeru has remained in a state of virtually continuous activity.

Following the eruption, there were no immediate evacuations, but the National Agency for Disaster Mitigation warned the population of villages on the mountain slopes.

Air crash in Java Sea

Air Crash in Java Sea

Saturday, a plane with 62 passengers crashed in the Java Sea just after taking off from Jakarta.

According to the Indonesian Navy, there wouldn’t be any survivors.

Before the crash, fishermen saw the accident. One of them reported from Lancang Island: “It was like lightning, very fast. It exploded when it hit the water. I saw debris floating. It was airplane debris.”

People are still shaken by the tragedy. Relatives of the passengers are waiting for information while the navy is searching the wreckage area: "We're in grief, still praying for the best” the pilot’s uncle said, "If he is gone what I want is to be able to bring him home and bury him properly," a mother said. The Navy is currently looking for the black boxes containing data recorders with the cockpit voice after taking off from the capital, that could be used to find out the source of the accident.

New magnitude 5.0 earthquake in Aceh

New magnitude 5.0 earthquake in Aceh

Today, Thursday January 7, 2021, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake erupted at 6:27 a.m. local time in Sabang, Kota Sabang, Aceh. It is 77km deep from the epicenter that the earthquake started. However, the exact magnitude, epicenter and depth of the earthquake can be questioned: seismologists are still studying the data from this earthquake. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) also determined a magnitude 5.0

Fortunately, the earthquake did not take place in the city: the nearest inhabited town is Sabang, 124 km from the epicenter. Sabang is an Indonesian city in the province of Aceh. The area is 134 km² and the population is 34,333 habitants. For the moment, no serious injury or death has been reported by the authority and there is no major material damage either.
